Staying Connected on the Zurich–Interlaken–Zermatt Train Line
The Zurich–Interlaken–Zermatt route is one of the most photographed train journeys in the country, and it’s also a good test case for what “good coverage” actually means in Switzerland: mostly excellent, occasionally interrupted, and never quite uniform. Here’s what to expect leg by leg, so you can plan around the gaps instead of being surprised by them.
Zurich to Interlaken: the easy leg
This stretch runs through some of the most densely covered terrain in the country. Zurich itself has strong LTE and 5G practically everywhere, and the route toward Bern and on to Interlaken passes through populated valleys and larger towns the whole way. Video calls, maps, and hotspot use are all realistic expectations on this leg. The one place signal briefly softens is inside shorter tunnels along the way, but sessions typically resume within seconds once the train re-emerges — rarely long enough to notice unless you’re mid-call.
Interlaken to Zermatt: where the honesty starts
This is the leg where the scenery gets more dramatic and the signal gets less consistent — the two facts are related. The route climbs through narrower alpine valleys, and Zermatt itself sits at the end of the line in a valley ringed by peaks, including the Matterhorn. Villages along the way generally have solid coverage since Swiss operators build for the residents who live there year-round, not just for visitors passing through. Between villages, especially where the train runs through longer tunnels or hugs a valley wall away from any settlement, expect signal to weaken or drop briefly.
Longer alpine base tunnels on Swiss lines are increasingly equipped for signal — a deliberate investment by the network operators — but “increasingly” is doing real work in that sentence: not every tunnel on every line has coverage yet, and some of the older, shorter mountain tunnels on scenic routes are simply too costly to retrofit for their traffic volume. Treat any tunnel as a possible dead zone rather than assuming coverage will follow you through it.
Zermatt itself adds one more honest detail worth knowing in advance: it’s a car-free resort, reached by rail rather than road, and the final approach winds through a narrowing valley with peaks rising close on both sides. That geometry is part of what makes the arrival so striking, and it’s also exactly the kind of terrain that can pinch signal in the last few minutes before the train pulls in — nothing to worry about, just don’t plan a call for that stretch specifically.
What actually breaks, and what doesn’t
It’s worth separating two different things travelers sometimes conflate: losing signal briefly in a tunnel, and losing signal because you’ve drifted onto a foreign network near a border. This route doesn’t run near an international border, so the second issue doesn’t apply here — what you’re dealing with on this line is purely topography, not a network mix-up. A few habits make the patchy stretch a non-issue rather than a frustration:
- Download your route offline in your maps app before you board — a five-second task at the station that saves you from staring at a spinning wheel in a tunnel.
- Save your train and connection tickets inside the relevant app rather than relying on a live login screen; most Swiss rail apps let you store tickets for offline access.
- Treat a live connection as a bonus on the scenic middle leg, not something to plan a video call around. Save calls for Zurich, Interlaken, or Zermatt itself, where signal is dependable.
- Let flight mode save your battery if the phone is visibly hunting for signal in a dead stretch — it reconnects on its own within seconds of re-entering coverage.
- Bring a physical or downloaded copy of your rail timetable for the middle leg specifically, so a brief gap in coverage never turns into missing a connection you were relying on checking live.
