Install a Switzerland eSIM on a Google Pixel over Wi-Fi before you go: clean Android menus, the per-SIM roaming toggle, and what to do near the border.

Nothing about a Pixel makes this hard; the hard part is the geography. Switzerland is the hole in Europe’s free-roaming map — not in the EU, not covered by the roam-like-at-home rule, and handled by every operator differently: some fold it into their bundles, many meter it as a separate zone. A Pixel owner from Berlin can cross at Basel and watch data quietly switch from free to billed without changing seats. Travelers from further away never had the free part to lose.
The fix takes one evening at home. Buy a plan in the Switzerland eSIM app, install the line over your own Wi-Fi, leave it switched off, and arrive with one toggle between you and a working map. There is no penalty for installing early: the plan counts from its first connection to a Swiss network, not from the moment of purchase. In the country itself the Pixel is in its element. Swiss networks are dense and fast, the long rail tunnels carry signal, and the included hotspot turns a train seat into a desk. Plan around the two honest limits: high-alpine trails and remote side valleys are out of coverage for every operator — download offline maps before a mountain day — and near the borders the phone can latch onto a neighbouring country’s network the plan does not cover, which the last step above fixes in thirty seconds. Buy your plan in the Switzerland eSIM app
Choose the plan that matches the trip and pay in the app. The QR code and manual activation details live under your order for whenever you need them.

Install before you leave home
A profile download needs a real connection. Doing it before departure loses you nothing, because the plan begins counting at its first connection to a Swiss network rather than at purchase.

Open Settings, Network & internet, SIMs
Tap the add symbol next to SIMs. On recent Android versions the Pixel offers Download a SIM instead — that is the eSIM path. Older releases word it slightly differently, but the screen is the same.

Scan the QR code from your order
Point the camera at the code displayed on a second screen. If there is no second screen around, choose the manual option and type in the SM-DP+ address and activation code from the app.

Confirm, label the line, leave it off
The Pixel downloads the profile and asks you to confirm. Label it Switzerland so the dual-SIM screens make sense on a station platform, keep your home SIM as the default for calls, and disable the new line until you arrive.

On arrival, switch the line on and give it data
Open Settings, Network & internet, SIMs, select the Switzerland line and switch it on, then set Mobile data to that line. Your usual number stays active on its own SIM for calls and texts.

Turn Roaming on for the Switzerland line only
With the Switzerland line open, switch Roaming on. Android keeps this toggle per SIM, which is exactly what you want: it grants this line permission to attach to a visited network, and on this prepaid plan it adds nothing. Confirm your home SIM still has its roaming switch off.

No signal? Point it at a Swiss network by hand
The Pixel normally registers within a minute or two. If not, toggle Airplane mode. Still nothing — or you are near Geneva, Basel or Lugano: open the line's settings, turn off automatic network selection, and pick a Swiss network from the list. Near the border that one move is usually the whole fix.
Troubleshooting
Do I get a Swiss phone number with the plan?
No. This is a data-only plan, so no Swiss number comes with it and none can be attached. Your own number stays on your own SIM and remains reachable. For a visit that is rarely a problem: Swiss tickets, hotels and bookings run on email and apps, not on callbacks to a local number.
My EU plan includes free roaming — is Switzerland covered?
Only if your operator chose to include it, because no law makes them: Switzerland is outside the EU and the roam-like-at-home rule stops at the border. Some plans bundle Switzerland in, many bill it as a separate zone. Your tariff page is the only real answer, and it is a better read before the trip than after.
The QR code will not scan.
More brightness on the screen showing the code, less glare, and a hand's width of distance usually solve it. Otherwise take the manual path and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code across from your order — the same line installs either way.
The download fails or the option is missing.
Dial *#06# and look for an EID to confirm the hardware, then check the phone is carrier-unlocked — a locked Pixel declines outside profiles, and the unlock request goes faster from home. If the download stalls midway, restart the phone and try again from the order screen.
I have arrived and there is still no data.
Check in order that the Switzerland line is on, selected for mobile data, and has Roaming enabled. Toggle Airplane mode to force a fresh search. If the status bar shows a network name that is not Swiss, you are on the border quirk: select a Swiss network manually and data comes straight back.
Will the roaming toggle cause charges?
Not on this line. The plan is prepaid for Swiss networks, so no home operator stands behind it to bill you; the toggle is a permission, not a meter. It is your home SIM's roaming switch that costs money in Switzerland — leave that one off.
