Switzerland eSIM on Samsung Galaxy: Setup Guide
Install a Switzerland eSIM on a Samsung Galaxy: the One UI menus, the roaming switch that costs nothing here, and the EID check to run before you buy.

A Galaxy owner heading for Switzerland has one extra homework item and one shared problem. The homework is eSIM support, which Samsung ships by model and region — two phones with the same name on the box can differ, so the EID check in step one comes before anything else. The shared problem is the border: Switzerland is not in the EU, and the free-roaming rule that covered the rest of a European itinerary stops there. Whether your operator bridges the gap or bills a separate Swiss zone is written in your tariff, and most people find out from the bill.
The eSIM route settles it in advance. Buy a plan in the Switzerland eSIM app, install the line over home Wi-Fi the evening you pack, and leave it switched off until the trip starts. On arrival two settings finish the job: Mobile data pointed at the Swiss line, and Data roaming enabled for that line alone. The clock starts at the first connection to a Swiss network, not at checkout, so installing early is free. Once it is running, the plan behaves the way Swiss networks do — which is to say, very well. Signal holds through the long rail tunnels and up most cable cars, and hotspot is included, so the Galaxy can carry a laptop through a working train ride between Zurich and Geneva. The honest limits: high-alpine trails and some remote valleys are dead ground for every operator, so download offline maps before a mountain day, and remember the plan is data-only — no Swiss number comes with it. Step 1
Check your Galaxy actually has eSIM
Samsung support varies by model and region, so check before buying a plan: dial *#06# and look for an EID line. An EID means the hardware is there; no EID means this handset needs a physical SIM regardless of what the same model does in another market.

Buy your plan in the Switzerland eSIM app
Pick the plan that fits the trip and pay in the app. The QR code and the manual activation details sit under your order, so nothing is lost if the first scan fails.

Step 3
Install over home Wi-Fi, not station Wi-Fi
Downloading a profile needs a working connection, and doing it at home the evening you pack beats doing it on arrival with a train to catch. Being early costs nothing: the plan counts from its first connection to a Swiss network, not from when you paid.

Step 4
Open Settings, Connections, SIM manager
On One UI the eSIM screen lives at Settings, Connections, SIM manager. Tap Add eSIM, and the Galaxy searches for a plan to install.

Scan the QR code from your order
Choose Scan QR code and point the camera at the code on a second screen. No second screen handy: pick the manual option and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code across from the app.

Label the line and leave it off until departure
Call it Switzerland so the preferred-SIM screens are readable later, keep your home SIM set for calls and texts, and turn the new line off until you arrive. Nothing is consumed while it sits there.

On arrival, hand data to the Swiss line
Back in SIM manager, switch the Switzerland line on and set Mobile data to it under Preferred SIMs. Your own number stays live on your home SIM for calls and texts.

Enable Data roaming for the Swiss line only
Under Connections, Mobile networks, turn Data roaming on for the Switzerland line — that switch is what lets a line register on a visited network, and on this prepaid plan it adds nothing. Leave it off for your home SIM, which your own carrier does bill.
Troubleshooting
My plan roams free across the EU — does it cover Switzerland too?
Not automatically, and that is the whole point of this page. Switzerland is outside the EU, so the roam-like-at-home rule ends at the border; some operators bridge it voluntarily, many bill a separate Swiss zone. Your tariff page has the answer — read it before the trip rather than on the bill after.
Does this give me a Swiss phone number?
No. The plan carries data only. Your own number stays on your own SIM and keeps receiving calls and texts as normal, and for a visit that is usually all you need — Swiss bookings and tickets run on email and apps rather than callbacks.
The QR code will not scan.
Turn up the brightness on the screen showing the code, hold the Galaxy a hand's width back, and avoid glare. If it still refuses, use the manual entry option and copy the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your order — the result is the same line.
There is no Add eSIM entry in SIM manager.
Either the handset has no eSIM hardware — dial *#06# and check for an EID — or a carrier lock is hiding the option. An unlock request to your operator solves the second case, and it goes much faster from home than from a hotel.
I am in Switzerland and mobile data will not work.
Check in order: the Switzerland line is on, Mobile data points at it, and Data roaming is enabled for it. Then toggle Flight mode to force a fresh network search. Near Geneva, Basel or Lugano, also check which network the phone found — close to the border it can latch onto a French, German or Italian network this plan does not cover. Select a Swiss network manually and data returns.
Will data roaming charges appear from that switch?
Not on this line. The plan is prepaid for Swiss networks, so there is no home operator behind it to send a bill — the switch only grants permission to attach. Keep it off on your home SIM, where the same switch has real consequences.
